Twenty-five years ago I started in the direct marketing business accidentally – I needed a job and one of the worlds’ largest magazine subscription fulfillment companies had an entry level position in their direct mail division. The journey began.

That’s where I first learned the importance of customer growth, lists and offers. From there I moved to an executive position at a direct marketing services company whose primary client segments were in the seminar business, the non-profit charity segment and the direct mail insurance business.

I was fortunate enough to work with clients who really knew how to use direct mail and thus came to understand the power of direct marketing. Something else happened – I saw that every day my mail box contained badly done direct mail. I’d get elaborate packages with no offer or efforts that were obviously mis-targeted. I also began to notice how many companies were not using direct marketing at all. Why?

In November of 1990 I launched Jim Brown Direct Mail Consulting with the idea that I would help companies add direct mail to their marketing mix or I would help companies that were doing it badly get better results. In that 15 years we’ve evolved. We came to understand that we best served companies with multiple outlets and channels – department store chains, pizzeria franchises, grocery chains, automotive dealer groups, hospitality holding companies, etc.

Three years ago we came to the realization that this is the age of consumer choice in communications. They may prefer to buy from your website instead of driving to one of your stores. Some of them will respond to a well-done direct mail package, while others will be moved to action (a purchase) by an email. If you really want them to buy in today’s world you have to let them decide.

Thus, we have become Direct Marketing Solutions – a company providing fully integrated solutions that sell.
